Why I Built Teen Independence Readiness - And Why It's Personal

Some callings don't arrive as lightning bolts. They arrive quietly, through the lives of people you love, and they grow in you slowly - over decades - until the day you finally understand that everything you've experienced has been preparing you for exactly this work. That's my story.
It Started With My Grandmother.
My grandmother raised seven children. Seven. And when that season of her life was complete, when most women would have exhaled and rested, she opened her home to a foster son. I was little when this happened. I didn't have the language for what I was witnessing. What I knew was that my grandmother saw a child who needed a home, and she simply made room. No fanfare. No hesitation. Just love expressed as action. That image never left me. Decades later, it still hasn't.
I never had children of my own, and that absence has lived alongside a deep and persistent desire to nurture, protect, and invest in young people. Even now, as an adult, I carry a quiet dream - to rescue a sibling group from foster care, or to build a tiny home village for teens aging out of the system. Not just housing. Something built with hyperadobe or lavacrete, where the teens themselves put their hands into the walls of their own home - so that the place where they finally belong is also something they helped create. A family compound. A community. A place they can always call home. That dream lives in me the same way my grandmother's example does - steady, patient, and completely serious.
The Cliff Edge at 18
Here's what most people don't know about the foster care system: it has an expiration date. When a foster youth turns 18, the system considers its job complete. No parent to call. No safety net. No one to co-sign an apartment lease, walk them through opening a bank account, teach them how to negotiate a salary, or sit across the table and help them figure out what comes next. They simply age out - and they land wherever they land.
The outcomes for foster youth after aging out are sobering. Studies consistently show significantly higher rates of housing instability, unemployment, and financial hardship compared to their peers. Many had no one in their corner teaching them the foundational life skills that most teenagers absorb at home, almost by accident, just by watching their parents navigate adult life. That cliff edge at 18 is real, and it is avoidable.
Sacred Heart University Showed Me What Was Possible
Before I built Teen Independence Readiness, I worked in the Career Development Office at Sacred Heart University. Every day I sat across from young people trying to figure out who they were, what they wanted, and how to build a life that meant something. I loved that work. I loved the teenagers and young adults who walked through that door carrying equal parts potential and uncertainty. I loved watching the moment something clicked - when a student realized they had more to offer than they thought, when a conversation shifted their entire trajectory.
That experience showed me what becomes possible when a young person receives focused, practical guidance at exactly the right moment. It also showed me how much was missing for young people who never got that guidance at all. Foster youth rarely get that moment. Most age out of the system without it.
Why Teen Independence Readiness Exists
Teen Independence Readiness grew from all of it - my grandmother's quiet, expansive love, my years at Sacred Heart University, and the persistent ache I carry for every young person aging out of foster care without a roadmap. The program exists because life skills are not a luxury. Financial literacy, professional communication, goal setting, self-advocacy, understanding how systems work - these are the tools every young person deserves before adulthood arrives. For most teens, these skills get transferred at home, informally, over years. For foster youth, that transfer often never happens.
Teen Independence Readiness bridges that gap. It gives teens - and the parents, guardians, and caseworkers walking alongside them - a practical, structured pathway into capable, confident adulthood. Every session I deliver carries the memory of my grandmother making room. Every resource I build holds space for the teens who have been waiting for someone to show them that they matter, that they are capable, and that adulthood is something they can meet on their own terms.
The Dream Is Still Growing
Here I am as an adult many years later, and the dream my grandmother planted in me is still alive and still expanding. The tiny home village ... the sibling group with a family compound they can always return to ... the teens who build their own walls with their own hands and understand -- maybe for the first time -- that they have a home that belongs to them permanently. That vision fuels everything I build through Life Strategies International. Teen Independence Readiness is one expression of it. And it is just the beginning.
